Member Challenge: Consider NACAC Committee Service Today

A commitment to a responsive, representative, and effective system of association governance that better serves our members, is one of several priorities set by the NACAC board at our November meeting in Arlington, Virginia. We are looking to define and develop more effective engagement between the board, affiliate leadership, committee chairs and members, and with membership in general; to promote diversity, inclusion, and effective dialogue among members; and to affirm the shared values of the organization and what unites us as members. 

In order to accomplish these goals, I am seeking your participation in NACAC committee service. We face great challenges this year and need you to be involved in the search for solutions. We need engaged members on our committees, solving the problems we face in our profession.

As the work of the Ad Hoc Committee on Governance Restructuring evolves, there may even be some changes in the shape and mission of some of these committees in order to address more critical issues in a time sensitive manner.  Committee service will always remain an opportunity for members to contribute to the development of NACAC policies and programs and to gain valuable leadership experience at the national level. As we consider changes to strengthen our committee structure, we are looking for committee members who are representative of the diversity of our membership, who are willing to embrace this opportunity, and who want to engage with us in focused, respectful, and decisive action.

NACAC members who serve on national committees give their time and talent while enjoying the professional and personal rewards of a dynamic leadership opportunity. Committee members can discover and research important issues impacting our profession while holding true to our ethics. Additionally, committee members work with NACAC staff at determining where programs and policies can be created or further expanded to meet NACAC’s strategic principles.

Committee members come from high schools, community colleges, universities, community-based organizations, independent educational consultants, and many other segments of our membership. The one common trait all committee members have is passion to impact change while possessing the energy, ideas, and leader­ship ability to ensure that our association remains vibrant and relevant.    

My own life has included a commitment to service for many years, based on a belief that there is a special satisfaction that comes in serving someone other than oneself. As we tackle issues of national and international importance for our profession, I can’t imagine a more important time for you to be involved in NACAC committee work.

I invite you to join me at this critical juncture in our association to help shape our future direction. Working together we can find the answers to the questions we face now, as well as those that will unfold in the next few years. 

Make an informed decision and take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the process and role of each national committee. Please review the Committee Service Guidelines regarding the expectations, eligibility, volunteer forms, and appointment process for committee members.

Please note that volunteering for committee service is a separate and distinct process from running for election to the Board of Directors. 

  • Committee appointments are made by the NACAC president, president-elect and past president, and approved by the Board of Directors.
  • The slate of nominees for the NACAC Board of Directors is selected from among the applicants by the Governance and Nominating Committee. New Board members will be elected by the Assembly at the 2019 conference in Louisville, Kentucky. 

Qualified members may apply for both committee service and the Board of Directors during the same application cycle.
