National Association for College Admission Counseling- Independent Educational Consultant

Independent Educational Consultant - $250

Independent educational consultants or counselors who are self-employed or employed by a company providing counseling, admission, or financial aid services to students and/or their parents. 


✓ Must have a NACAC voting membership in the current or immediately preceding year prior to applying as an independent educational consultant.


✓ Must have membership with the Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA) or Professional Membership in Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA). Applicants must provide proof of current membership in HECA or IECA at time of application.

If applicant does not meet either of the two preceding criteria, then applicant must have:

✓ A bachelor’s degree and two years of college admission counseling experience in a secondary school or postsecondary setting or in a not-for-profit organization (e.g., community-based or religious) eligible for NACAC membership or two years experience as an educational consultant or counselor.


✓ Documented completion of a practicum based counseling program from a NACAC member eligible institution.


✓ Written recommendation from a current NACAC high school, college/university or independent education consultant member who has known the applicant for at least two years in a professional capacity.

✓ Must provide copies of professional literature or links to the business website outlining relevant college counseling services. 

✓ Must provide a description of college counseling services provided.

Shall support the purposes of NACAC and comply with the CEPP: NACAC’s Code of Ethics and Professional Practices as stated in the association’s bylaws (Article III.2 and 4.)

 What to know before you apply:

  • All memberships require approval and some may require additional information before being approved.

    Membership application approval and dues processing may take up to seven business days to complete. Once approved you will receive an invoice which can be paid online.

  • Member benefits will begin once your application is approved and your dues have been paid.

  • Membership obtained outside of the United States will incur a mail service fee of $12.50.

  • NACAC's membership cycle is Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. New membership that starts Jan. 1 through Sept. 30 will expire Dec. 31 of the same year. Individuals who join prior to Oct. 1 will receive an invoice for the following year during our annual renewal billing process in October. Additionally, new membership beginning after Oct. 1 will expire Dec. 31 of the following year.
