National Awards

Excellence in Education Award

The Excellence in Education Award is presented to an individual who has improved the field of education and/or the way students are served.

Margaret E. Addis Service to NACAC Award

The Addis Award recognizes a NACAC member who has provided the association with unique and outstanding service.

Gayle C. Wilson Service to Education Award

The Wilson Award is presented to a NACAC member who, over a period of years, has performed outstanding service to our profession.

Other Awards

The Government Relations Award is presented to a NACAC member who has made outstanding efforts in support of policy initiatives that promote equal access to higher education, encourage student achievement and promote counselor excellence, and further the government relations priorities of NACAC members. 2017 Margaret E. Addis Service to NACAC Award Winner

I met Margaret Addis years ago when I was at the Harvard Summer Institute. She was a formidable presence. She was instrumental in crafting the original version of what became NACAC’s Statement of Principles of Good Practice. Since I am a former affiliate and national Admissions Practices committee chair, it was very moving to receive an award named after her.

2017 Gayle C. Wilson Service to Education Award

Receiving the Gayle C. Wilson Service Award has caused me to pause and reflect on the incredible opportunity we have as educators to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our most vulnerable young people seeking to participate in the great American dream. It reminds me that our communities, schools and colleges, and society depend upon us as admission professionals to provide ethical leadership, sound advice and critical insights on ensuring that the promise of a college education is attainable for all students who seek it. I am indeed grateful and honored to have been acknowledged this way by my peers. And it inspires me to be even more resolute in continuing to advocate for access and equity in higher education, especially for those from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds.

Recent award winners reflect on receiving NACAC's Excellence in Education Award

To say I was surprised at receiving the Award would be the greatest of understatements. In receiving the Award, I am simply one of thousands of NACAC members who have worked over the years to promote access to higher education for students from all ethnic and economic backgrounds.There are many other members who are at least as worthy of recognition and it is vitally important for NACAC members to nominate their colleagues so that the issues they care about are front and center at our regional and national meetings each year.

We were in the thick of things running our program at Whitman College, I had just helped set up the college fair and took a moment to sit on the floor with some counselors to check email and get ready for our next session when I learned I had been selected to receive a NACAC Award. Because my focus was on our programmatic work, I had to read it several times and I finally handed my laptop over to my colleagues with a big smile! It was special to share this moment during the College Horizons program with the volunteer counselors and college partners because it was an affirmation of our work that is centered in college access, equity, and inclusion of Native American students in higher education.
